Environmental Sustainability in Social Care 

Sustainable health and social care | The King’s Fund (kingsfund.org.uk) – This report from the Kings Fund provides an overview of current knowledge about the environmental impacts of health and social care and examines the evidence for a connection between sustainability, productivity and other system objectives (though a little dated now, much is still relevant). The authors consider how health and social care needs to change to become more environmentally sustainable. 

Sustainability in the care sector – UK Care Week – A short read, a quick article on environmental sustainability in the social care sector covering basic themes you might want to be thinking about, and how the green agenda links with preventative models of care and digital technologies.  

 

All material from the Health and Social Care Management’s Greener Care Conference 2022 is available to watch on youtube – this particular video is specifically about social care, but the rest of the material is also useful to draw from.  

The Caring View is a podcast which covers a wide range of topics in social care. This episode features the co-founders of the Social Care Sustainability Alliance and Hannah from our member, Grace Cares. It is a great discussion about the topic, what providers are struggling with and where to start – good to watch/listen to over lunch!

Home :: Energy Technology List (beis.gov.uk) – The Energy Technology List is a collection of over 8,000 government backed energy efficiency products, updated twice a month. Each of the products on the list have been reviewed and accredited by technical specialists. They aim to combat greenwashing and save businesses time, energy and money.

Waste and Resource Management  

Key resources | WRAP WRAP is a global climate action NGO focussing on emissions reductions through developing a circular economy, changing the way things are produced, consumed and disposed of. The produce roadmaps, guides and reports across several topics, but their roadmap for reducing food waste is particularly useful. They have sector specific tools – which unfortunately do not include social care yet – that could be adapted.

Placeshapers – Decarbonisation – Placeshapers are a network of community-based housing associations. Their report ‘Residents’ Voices in the UK’s Net Carbon Zero Journey’ is a good insight into how decarbonising measures can impact those drawing on support services.

They’re simple, quick and provide a great starting point. This article covers how to engage your employees on your net zero journey and includes a workshop template which you can download for free. 

Accreditation and certification 

https://carbonliteracy.com/organisation/ – Can become accredited as a carbon literate organisation, with different levels of commitment. NHS use this organisation for their carbon literacy training for their staff. There are no social care sector specific resources, but you can draw from other similar sectors like healthcare and SME’s.
