DECHOKER UK are pleased to announce their partnership with an NHS Foundation Trust, furthering the company’s commitment to reducing the significant number of choking deaths in the adult care sector.

The project, which began last summer, saw researchers from an NHS Foundation Trust review the existing guidance for providers on the management of a choking incident in both the elderly and for people with additional needs.

A landmark piece of research, it is the first to highlight the problems faced managing a cohort that presents both a significant choking risk, and where current Basic Life Support guidance may be prove inappropriate, impractical or impossible to perform.

As part of the collaboration DECHOKER UK reached out to their clients across the adult care sector inviting them to participate with the study. Many of whom were more than willing to contribute both their time and expertise.
This allowed researchers to conduct interviews with carers, managers and other healthcare professionals about the ever-present risk of choking, and the impact on those involved when the worst happens.

Researchers also evaluated more than 25 individual incidents where a DECHOKER had been used in a choking emergency in a UK adult care setting, firmly establishing an independent evidence base for the life-saving device.
Completed earlier this year, the study will shortly be published in a recognised and respected medical journal for healthcare professionals.
