29.9.20 – iPad Offer for Care Homes

NHSX is investing in up to 11,000 iPads for care homes to improve access to health care services for care home residents. More details can be found here.

11.9.20 – Track and Trace App

The Track and Trace App is launching on 24 September in England and Wales. The App has been redesigned to use Apple and Google’s decentralised model to protect privacy.

These documents are geared towards setting up systems so visitors to care homes can tracked and traced. The QR guidance sheet states:

“For care homes we advise having a QR code poster at the entrance that visitors to the premises can scan on entry. You should continue to maintain any visitor registration system that you already have in place. We also recommend that care homes have QR code posters for waiting rooms and recreational areas that are regularly attended by external visitors and guests. If there are different restaurant and café areas within a large care home, they should each have their own QR code.”

13.5.20 – Internet Broadband Offers for Care Homes

NHSX and NHS Digital have negotiated a range of internet connection offers with telecom companies. Two new pieces of guidance complement this:

6.5.20 – The Care Workforce App

A new dedicated app for the adult social care workforce in England has been launched. This app will:

  • Give care workers access to guidance, learning resources, discounts and other support in one place
  • Offer support on mental health and wellbeing through toolkits and resources

Digital Social Care has set up a new helpline to support the adult social care sector with harnessing technology during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Our team of digital experts are here to help social care providers access practical advice to troubleshoot a technical problem or give in-depth one-to-one support.

Our helpline will be open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday by calling 0208 133 3430 or by email on [email protected]

It’s a challenging time in social care and we want to do all we can to share our skills and knowledge to help you. The aim of the helpline is to provide you and your staff with technical advice, so that you can continue to provide care to those who need you during the outbreak.

NHSX Research

NHSX has a team looking at how they can support care providers during the COVID-19 crisis. They want to speak to care providers in the UK about their COVID-19 response and tech needs. Lockdown lifeline to keep relatives connected offered to all UK care homes

Care homes across the UK are being offered a vital line of communication that will enable families to stay updated about the care of elderly residents during coronavirus lockdown.

Allowing secure social media style messages and photos to be shared between care home residents and their families, it will also give carers an efficient way to provide wellbeing updates to concerned loved ones.

Motitech launching campaign during the COVID-19 crisis: Free cycling and video with Motiview

We are all affected by the COVID-19 virus, and we fully appreciate the stresses experienced by care sector professionals during this challenging time. We all look forward to an improvement in the situation but, in the interim period, we trust that Motiview can prove a source of inspiration and escapism for residents (as well as staff). The risk of inactivity and increased loneliness is significantly higher now, especially for older people.

As a consequence, we are now offering Motiview for free for 3 months to all care facilities that want to use it for the benefit of their residents. All you need to get going is a TV screen, a laptop, and some simple floor pedals or other exercise equipment.

The National Care Forum, alongside Care England, is also supporting the free three-month trial; helping those in long-term care get access to vital initiatives like this.

Directory of External Resources

HEE’s Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team has received offers of support from a range of organisations and commercial suppliers to support the workforce in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resources are considered to be complementary to the central provision of the education and training resources provided through the e-LfH Hub’s COVID-19 programme.

HEE TEL’s content review group has reviewed and collated the resources into a directory for the wider system to access.  It is recommended that the resources are reviewed and quality assured locally before being used to ensure they meet the need they are being used to address.

Service launched to track COVID-19 status and PPE use

In response to the unprecedented challenges faced across care, a new service has been launched today. Free to all users, C19 CONTROL records and reports COVID-19 status and PPE use at the frontline of care.
Designed to capture and share essential information, C19 CONTROL gives carers and care managers a simple but effective way of tracking the COVID-19 status of both staff and those being cared for. This includes identifying those who are self-isolating.
Given the challenges in the supply of PPE for care services, C19 CONTROL allows carers and teams to report the availability and use of protective equipment. This essential insight is shared with care managers in real time.

Keeping in Touch in Difficult Times

We’ve designed this Help Sheet in response to hearing concerns about blanket bans that prevent people keeping in contact with their friends and families. These restrictions have a big impact on a person’s mental health and well-being. Especially now, when visits have stopped and many people are no longer allowed out.

There are different ways that people can be supported to keep in touch with loved ones. We share these with examples we have heard about. Some hospitals are taking a positive and individual approach to risk. More need to do so. It is important to think about the different ways we can support people and their families in these difficult times.
It’s also important to remember that the Human Rights Act is still very much in force. Article 8 is the right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence: which includes email, letters and other ways of keeping in touch. Legislation means that health and care workers have a duty to respect that right, protect that right and fulfil that right for people, whether someone is in hospital or living at home. We hope that this guide helps you do that.
