Maidstone supported living residents celebrate in the sun

Staff and residents at a Maidstone-based supported housing service recently got together to celebrate their achievements in the sunshine.

Residents past and present from Sanctuary Supported Living’s Swan House and Bower Mount Road services came together for a barbecue party at Bower Mount Road. Both Swan House and Bower Mount Road provide accommodation and tailored support for adults aged 18 to 65, with a range of mental health needs.

The residents planned every aspect of the day themselves, including preparing and cooking the food, supported by the staff team who encourage them to develop their confidence and life skills, with the aim of living as independently as possible.

Everyone who attended appreciated the chance to socialise safely, especially after more than a year of lockdown and restrictions.

One of the former residents Tom, said: “It was so good to be in the garden and still feel part of the community.”

Project Worker, Donna Laffan, added: “The event was a big success and the fact that five former residents came along is a real testament to how they feel about their time with us at both services. Everyone is already looking forward to the next time.”

Local Service Manager, Kim Murphy, added: “The support we provide to all our residents focuses on equipping them with the life skills they need, so that they can move on when they’re ready and live independently.

It’s wonderful that our current residents have been able to build on their skills to organise this celebration event. The opportunity for them to meet up with some of our former residents also shows what a great sense of community we have here and inspires residents to look forward to a positive future ahead of them.”
