The Meath is a voluntary organisation committed to helping men and women with epilepsy be as independent as possible and to realise their potential. The Countess of Meath, who founded the home said: “it should be worked on the lines of a home ……… being made as bright and cheerful as possible.”

We provide a range of services offering real choices for people with epilepsy and associated difficulties:

• Residential care services with levels of care to meet people’s varying needs.
• Supported housing
• Day services and community based day services
• Clinical advice and support

Our Vision
The Meath supports people with epilepsy, many of whom have learning disabilities. We treat our residents as individuals and enable them to enjoy life at the Meath and in the local community At all times we seek to:-

• provide a high-quality, homely and needs-led service for our residents.
• ensure our service exceeds the expectations of all who use us.
• offer a quality service at a cost-effective level.
• motivate and develop our staff.
• promote an open and participative environment among everyone associated with the organisation.

Residential Services and Supported Living

The Meath is centred around a historic mansion, dating from the seventeenth century. The buildings are set in beautiful, rural surroundings, five minutes’ walk from the centre of Godalming and the railway station. Access to the Meath by road from all parts of the southeast is quick and easy.

Residents` accommodation is in the form of several units with bedrooms, linked to a shared lounge and kitchen area. Residents are encouraged to take responsibility for their own lives and, with staff help, in the day-to-day running of their units. Meals are prepared in the units and there is also a central dining room. A lift is available to ensure that all areas of the Meath are accessible.

We take a person centred approach to all our services to ensure that individuals achieve the best possible quality of life in any situation. We openly welcome the latest thinking and developments in support services and aim to adapt what we offer to meet the changing needs of each individual. The Meath sets high standards and places great emphasis on the dignity and personal needs of each person.

Supported Living

The Meath is delighted to be working in partnership with Mount Green Housing Association on the provision of flats in Godalming for people with epilepsy. The people living there will be supported by Meath staff and enabled to live an independent lifestyle in a setting that allows them autonomy. It is anticipated that the flats will be ready by the end of 2003. In the meantime, some existing residents are working towards developing the skills necessary for this type of living. However, people not currently living within Meath services may also apply for these flats.

The Meath Day Centre

Meath Centre, which is a purpose-built facility, was officially opened in 1998 by Rolf Harris, following a major fundraising appeal. The Centre is light and spacious with everything in place for each individual need.

Meath Centre provides an environment which aims to maximise each person’s potential regardless of ability. A comprehensive programme of activities is offered throughout the week and is developed to suit the needs of the individual. Within our Day Centre activities we access the community. This plays a big part in our “independent life skills” programme, which covers learning about local transport and access to places such as libraries. Everyone attending our service is treated with respect and dignity, given choice and opportunities for developing independence and encouraged to speak out and achieve self-actualisation – none of us knows what we’re really capable of until given the chance.Address: The Meath, Westbrook Road, Godalming, Surrey, GU7 2QH
