We joined the Big Lunch at Galanos House (Eden Project Communities)

Galanos House and The Community Hub joined the #BigLunch which is the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours and communities, with millions of people coming together for a few hours of friendship, food and fun (1st-2nd June).

The event which is part of the Eden Project Communities connects people and encourages friendlier, safer communities where people start to share more – conversations, ideas, skills, resources, and friendships.

Local community groups all associated with ‘food’ such as Southam Allotments, Southam Food Bank, Southam Luncheon Club, Southam Produce Show and Warwickshire Food Champions spent the afternoon with us, including and a wonderful group of our residents from Galanos House who helped host our visitors.

We were also joined the Mayor of Southam and guest from another local care home, as well as a surprise visit from Sir Jeremy Wright (previous local MP) and local councillor Andy Crump – the icing on the cake!

An afternoon of chatting, singing and sharing a delicious homemade buffet (featuring @MattyEdgell celebrity Lemon and Poppyseed Loaf cake recipe from The Great British Bake Off) followed by the ‘Big Lunch Official Quiz, live music and a good old sing along.

We also welcomed the Southam RAF Cadets and Leamington & Warwick Sea Cadets who are always so supportive at our events and love to lend a hand.

Jo-Anne Wilson and Shelley Fardon have become Warwickshire Food Champions and invited Mike Slemensek from Warwickshire County Council who is part of the team leading the initiative. We therefore focused our theme on the benefits of healthy food and sustainability, showing the difference between a typical WW2 ration for one adult compared to a weekly Food Bank supply for one adult today. It was quite a talking point.

THANK YOU to our volunteers and amazing RBL team for such a brilliant day.
