Trident Group resident overcomes hurdles to leap from supported living to independence and celebrates Grand National success.

One of the biggest challenges for people with autism living in supported accommodation is achieving independence. Research suggests that many people living in supported settings do not go on to live independently.

At Trident Group, care and support services are tailored to help residents build the skills, confidence and resilience needed to live independently. For Alan Caddick, a Trident Group resident, this goal is now within reach after several years of demonstrating sustained progress.

Alan has shown his independence in a number of ways, including independently travelling to the Grand National on Saturday 11th April, where he produced an vlog documenting his experience. The vlog captures Alan navigating the event on his own, meeting well-known figures in sport and television, and confidently sharing his extensive knowledge of horse racing.

In the vlog, Alan speaks with Ryan Thomas, who played Jason Grimshaw in Coronation Street, and Matt Weston, Olympic gold medallist in Skeleton, discussing their predictions for the Grand National. Alan’s confidence and enthusiasm are clear throughout.

Lee Goddard, who has worked as a Trident Group support worker for 21 years, supporting Alan for around 16 of those years said:

Lee said:

“Alan has shown over the last two years that he can live independently. He budgets his money, pays his bills and manages his home well. He also supports his dad, who is a big part of his life, helping with washing and care.”

As a result of his progress, Alan has now been offered the opportunity to move into a general needs property, marking an important milestone in his journey towards independence.

Alan’s story highlights the positive impact of tailored care and support services in helping people build independent and fulfilling lives. Trident Group hopes this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Alan as he prepares to move into his own home.
