“It’s amazing he had the video shown in front of such important people.” Mum, Rebecca
Not all heroes wear capes – yet another update on those in our midst!
Do you recall in the summer we uncovered a fabulous young fella who talked up our young people’s activities?
Well Jacob is garnering national attention!
To big up #HAF2023 across England we were included in a national DfE (department for Education) celebration this month. This was attended by Junior Ministers and various big wigs from the DfE. Guess who became the main attraction – our very own Jacob –thanks to the video he did for us in the summer! He not only featured in the presentation – he was the grand finale –where the Deputy Director at DfE, Emily Whitehead said:
“How do you follow that – it was amazing.”
We also caught up with his mum Rebecca – who said:
“It’s amazing he had the video shown in front of such important people.”
What can we say – Jacob –you are a LEGEND!
You can see more here –(including the original vid)….We may have to rename the #HAF2023 page – the Jacob is a LEGpage!
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day is celebrated on October 10th every year to raise awareness of mental health issues and to encourage people to seek help if they need it. The theme for 2023, set by the World Foundation of Mental Health, is ‘Mental health is a universal human right’.
Here is what we are doing at Oaklea/R2W – some thoughts from our HR Manager, Helen Shaw:
“Here at Oaklea and Right2Work we support our employees to speak openly about any struggles they might be having with their mental health. With the support of our HR Team, Team Managers and our very own Mental Health First Aid Team we pride ourselves on supporting the workforce and creating a positive workplace culture through a positive support for employee wellbeing.
This World Mental Health Day we invite everyone to join us by pledging to protect, promote and respect mental health in our communities.
Mental Health UK are encouraging people to make their mental health a priority. Whether your supporting someone in your care, a loved one, a friend or a colleague atwork Mental Health UK are encouraging people to make a pledge. (This can be done by accessing the QR code below).
Once you’ve made a pledge, talk about this with others and share your ideas.
Let’s pledge to protect, promote, and respect the mental health of everyone in our workplace.”

Come on down
We are holding a public meeting in Appleby next month regarding our plans for the former Edenside Care Home.
Please spread the word to anyone you think may be interested – all welcome.
Posters have already gone up at Appleby TIC and flyers at the Appleby Hub.
CEO Clive Wigley will give an update + it’s an opportunity to see the latest plans from our Architect – and ask questions!
This is not a ‘dummy run’
Employees across Oaklea Group are currently undergoing First Aid Training. It’s a refresher for some and for others it’s their first time at first aid!
This session took place at South Lakes Foyer with staff from Carlisle to Windermere and as far away as Walney Island!
The host trainer – Marie Corry – has been working with Oaklea Group for some time.
The participants spent the day doing practical exercises, learning how to improve the safety of those they support & had a short exam at the end! (ask anyone who attends -why cottage cheese should be avoided off your shopping list! -Everyday is a school day – truly- on an Oaklea training course!)
First Aiders – Assemble….!
Anyone got seventy candles?
Many happy returns…
In between slicing some top birthday cake we managed to catch up with Team Manager, Zoe Jones:
“This is our customer Carol – celebrating her 70th birthday in Barrow. All Barrow and Ulverston Houses attended. My team at Langdale worked very hard to fulfil her wishes for her 70th Birthday. I’m very proud of my team!”
