First apprentices appointed as New Directions launches ambitious scheme aimed at providing opportunities to people with additional support needs 

Sefton Council-owned Adult Social Care provider creates career development opportunities to provide career paths to local people with the introduction of fourteen apprenticeships.  

New Directions’ apprenticeship programme is designed to offer job opportunities for people across the Sefton community. Twelve of the fourteen apprenticeships are focused on developing health and social care workers which are urgently needed across the care sector.  

These health and social care apprenticeships see applicants go on a sixteen-month rotation through three of New Directions’ diverse range of services, whilst undertaking a fully funded professional qualification. Successful applicants can choose from a wide range of services that they identify as an area of interest to undertake each placement. Each placement offers a unique insight into the different support needs of individuals. All apprenticeship positions are paid at the national minimum wage.  

The final two apprenticeships of the fourteen offer experience in the administrative aspects of working in adult social care. Both the Business Administration and Finance apprenticeships will also see successful applicants rotate between three New Directions services over the length of their sixteen-month journey.  

Adam Drury, Head of HR at New Directions, said the new apprenticeship programme achieves two key goals.

“Our apprenticeship programme will provide opportunities for people with additional support needs to build or maintain the independence, confidence, and skills to enter – and thrive in – the workplace. Our programme has the potential to make a positive impact on people’s lives.” 

All New Directions apprenticeships are offered with the support of training provider Impact Futures. As an employee-led learning organisation, New Directions also now offers a range of internal apprenticeships (NVQs) to existing staff. These qualifications are completed alongside New Directions’ staff’s current roles and act as a means of providing career development pathways.  

Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply for our social care apprenticeships due to the requirement to deliver personal care.
