As people opened the first few doors of their Advent calendars this week, Dorset House care home opened a special calendar aimed at promoting a feel-good factor in the build up to Christmas.

Staff at the Care South-run care home in Hamworthy, Poole, put together the special calendar – to be opened by both residents and colleagues throughout December – with acts to brighten someone else’s day, rather than the traditional chocolate.

Tasks in the ‘Acts of Kindness Calendar’ have been tailored for staff and residents, and include baking a cake for the care home, paying someone a compliment, donating to a food bank, and speaking to someone new.

Sally Howard, Home Administrator at Dorset House, said: “Rather than turning to the usual chocolate Advent calendars, we thought we would do something different to try to spread a bit of festive cheer around the care home in the lead up to Christmas.

“While Dorset House is a very social care home where people love interacting, we thought these small acts would help brighten someone’s day.

“As the Hamworthy community is very important to us here, we also thought it would be nice to help others through acts such as donating to the local food bank or another charity.”

Dorset House is a 50-bedroomed residential and dementia care home located in Coles Avenue, Hamworthy. There are a number of large communal lounges, which overlook the open and idyllic garden and pond, helping to create a homely atmosphere.
