When Cheryl Dobie started work at Sanctuary Care’s Prince Alfred Residential Care Home as a young care assistant in 1991, she couldn’t have imagined the journey that would follow. She fell in love with the home, the residents and the team and last week celebrated her 30th anniversary at the home she calls “her baby”.

Having been the home manager for the last 19 years, she said: “My passion is caring – it’s not a job, it’s a vocation. It is hard to put into words – the residents are like our second family. We spend so much more time with them, far more than with our own families at home!”

Speaking about the milestone anniversary Cheryl added: “It’s a bit overwhelming. Prince Alfred means the world to me and the team here is amazing. We have such a close knit team and we all work so well together, it is just a lovely place to be.

“Particularly over the last year while the pandemic has been on, we have all supported each other and become even closer as a family team.”

And Cheryl is not the only long serving member of the team at the care home, in Liverpool. Many of them have been there for years – some decades. There is over 300 years of experience between them, with many staff having worked many more than 15 years at the home.

Team leader Sue Birchall has been by Cheryl’s side since the beginning. She said: “Cheryl means everything to us at Prince Alfred and we are amazingly proud of her, she is fabulous. She is a fantastic manager and so caring – we can’t believe it’s been 30 years!”

Lynette Hunt, the home’s administrator added: “Cheryl is such a supportive manager; you can talk to her about anything. She has very high standards and is so passionate about the residents – making sure they are happy and safe.

She will do anything to make sure the quality of life for our residents is as perfect as it can be.”

Cheryl added: “As a team at Prince Alfred, we all want our residents to be treated with dignity and respect at all times. All the team has made it their mission to ensure that all residents feel valued and loved when they come to live with us.”
