Apprenticeships at OSJCT support career progression

National Apprenticeship Week 2022

One hundred new recruits in care homes, run by The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) are being enrolled to start their Level 2 care apprenticeships this spring. They will join 245 employees who are currently undertaking an apprenticeship.

The Trust supports employees across the organisation to gain qualifications in many areas such as care, catering and leadership and management through apprenticeships, at all levels. Many Home Managers and Head of Care in OSJCT homes have consolidated their knowledge and experience by gaining an apprenticeship as they progressed through the organisation.

Matt Aldridge-Russell, Head of Leadership and Vocational Development at OSJCT said: “National Apprenticeship Week celebrates this important pathway to career development. In undertaking an apprenticeship employees can put learning into practice in the workplace, get additional support and coaching from a skills coach through the training provider, and gain a nationally recognised qualification.”

Head of Care at Southfield House, Spalding, Lincolnshire, Rachel Kelman is just one of the many employees who has benefited from taking on an apprenticeship at OSJCT. Rachel joined the Trust in 2009 as a carer and studied Level 2 in Management and Team Leadership in 2018.  In November 2020, she started the Diploma Level 3 Lead adult care worker apprenticeship at Lincoln College.

Last December she was announced as the Overall Apprentice of the Year 2021, and also received the Care Services Apprenticeship Award from Lincoln College Group.

Rachel said: “I love my job and have enjoyed sharing my knowledge and experience through the work I have done for my qualifications. It’s not always easy to fit in the study, but I’ve had plenty of support from my Home Manager and my family. Recently I’ve been learning more about end-of-life care and researching different therapies.”
