Leading Better Employment Practice: How to prepare to work constructively with trade unions

Preparing for the changes being introduced by the Employment Rights Act in relation to industrial relations and trade unions:

We are running a series of three connected webinars exploring different aspects of how providers as employers can respond to the changes being introduced by the ERA’s trade union measures, including the strengthening of trade union’s right of access, the duty to inform workers of their right to join a trade union, and protections for trade union representatives.

  • The first webinar will be exploring top tips on how to prepare to work constructively with trade unions
  • The second webinar will focus on the specific trade union measures that the ERA brings, including the strengthening of trade union’s right of access, the duty to inform workers of their right to join a trade union, and protections for trade union representatives
  • The third will highlight how effective engagement with the workforce can be built

You’ve been invited to:

Leading Better Employment Practice – NCF Webinar on preparing how to work constructively with trade unions.

As part of our Leading Better Employment Practice offer for members, we are delighted to offer sessions planned to support members with very practical products and resources to respond to and prepare for the significant changes arising from the Employment Rights Act.

This is the first of three sessions exploring different aspects of how providers as employers can respond to the changes being introduced by the ERA’s trade union measures, including the strengthening of trade union’s right of access, the duty to inform workers of their right to join a trade union, and protections for trade union representatives.

In this session, we will be exploring top tips on how to prepare to work constructively with trade unions. We will hear from Gavin Edwards, Senior National Officer at UNISON and some NCF members about their experiences, challenges and top tips for how to create and sustain constructive relationships with trade unions.

You will gain insight into experiences and challenges you may encounter in relation to industrial relations and the changes due in later this year and hear about how to prepare for working with trade unions.

This session is part of our new programme: Leading Better Employment Practice!

The Employment Rights Act (ERA) marks a step change in employer–employee relations across the care and support sector. Throughout 2026, we are seeing a significant package of reforms come into force, with further changes expected later this year and into 2027. In this context, NCF is working to support the not-for-profit care and support sector to lead the way on employment practice, rising to both the opportunities and challenges presented by the legislation. Leading Better Employment Practice is a new programme of work that will:

  • Share and embed best employment practice across NCF membership and the wider sector
  • Help members prepare for, comply with, and innovate in response to the ERA
  • Support confident, values-led approaches to workers’ rights
  • Showcase NCF members demonstrating leadership in employment practice
  • Strengthen the collection, use and dissemination of workforce data and evidence
  • Support learning and development across adult social care
  • Contribute to the delivery of the sector’s workforce strategy

Expect webinars and learning sessions, practical tools and templates, tailored briefings on employment, peer-to-peer learning and opportunities to connection with key stakeholders. We’re even refreshing our pay, terms, and conditions benchmarking offer.
