Adult Safeguarding – updates and governance
A webinar for trustees and senior managers to mark Safeguarding Adults Week 2022
Safeguarding Adults Week is a time for organisations to come together to raise awareness of important safeguarding issues, and the first half of this webinar will give you a concise summary of some which we feel would be particularly helpful for trustees and senior managers to be aware of. In particular:
- The Charity Commission safeguarding guidance, and how it relates to safeguarding responsibilities under the Care Act 2014.
- Some themes for care organisations from published Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs).
- Pointers to the prevalence of abuse and neglect in care services – and some suggestions for reducing the risk of under-reporting.
The second half of the webinar will explore the safeguarding governance model developed by NCF member Friends of the Elderly. Through an independently chaired monitoring group, the model adds an external perspective to ongoing arrangements for safeguarding governance and scrutiny. It’s a model that may be of interest to other NCF members and, if members already have similar arrangements, there might be benefit in some ongoing contact to share learning and experience.
The webinar will be led by NCF partner Peter Cheer. Peter has worked in social care for over 30 years and as an independent consultant since 2015. With a particular interest in safeguarding, he is the independent chair of Friends of the Elderly’s Safeguarding Adults Sub-committee, and the independent chair of the Safeguarding Board at Midland Heart Housing Association. Peter has also supported care organisations in areas including business continuity, stakeholder surveys and investigations, and has managed national projects for the Care Provider Alliance and Digital Social Care. He is an Associate Consultant at the Institute of Public Care and a retained social care consultant for NCF annual partner Anthony Collins Solicitors.
Peter will be joined for the second half of the webinar by Soo Smith, Charity Secretary of Friends of the Elderly; and by Suzanne Everest, a member of the charity’s Safeguarding Adults Sub-committee whose mother lives in one of the charity’s care homes
