National Swimming Pool Day: Resident living with dementia takes the plunge thanks to care home and leisure centre
at Royal Star & Garter

Isobel Porter, an 81-year-old resident living with dementia at Royal Star & Garter in Surbiton, has rediscovered her joy for swimming, thanks to the collaborative efforts of care home staff and the Malden Centre. Accompanied by her husband, the care home’s staff, and the Wellbeing Coordinator, Isobel has been making regular trips to the leisure complex, gaining confidence and strength in the water. Her husband, Jeremy, expressed gratitude for the positive impact these sessions have had on Isobel’s well-being, emphasising the collaborative efforts between Royal Star & Garter and the Malden Centre in making this heartwarming experience possible. Care home staff continue popular exercise class in resident’s memory

In honour of the late Ken Harris, a former fitness instructor and resident at Royal Star & Garter in Surbiton, the Wellbeing Coordinators have continued his beloved Star Moves exercise classes. Ken, a WWII veteran and YMCA weight instructor initiated the classes in 2021 to promote mobility and well-being among residents, quickly turning it into a daily success. Now named “Ken’s Star Moves with the Wellbeing Team,” the classes serve as a heartfelt tribute, carrying on Ken’s legacy and bringing joy to fellow residents in his memory. Read more here.
