Caring in COVID: Personal shopping service at Protheroe House

At the beginning of lockdown, families of residents were no longer able to visit our services and so of course were unable to go food shopping for family members.

Given the age group of the residents it was also too risky for some residents to go out themselves, so for these residents much of their food shopping was ordered online.

The Team Manager at our Protheroe House Extra Care service in Haringey set up a personal shopping programme for those without family support or who were sometimes unable to get a delivery slot.

At the start of the initiative going shopping was a bit like ‘Supermarket Sweep’ for our staff and also a lot of fun!

There was a lot of navigating the virtual isles to hunt for individual preferences, and staff would sometimes be shopping for up to nine people at any one time.

Shopping deliveries were collected by staff from the front entrance of the service and then taken to the resident’s flats so that they themselves did not need to have contact with delivery drivers.

The scheme has a restaurant area where residents enjoy a daily hot three course meal together but for the first five months of the pandemic use of communal areas was not encouraged and residents could no longer dine downstairs together.

Frontline staff really went the extra mile and delivered hot food to all the flats every day. Not only did this ensure that our residents ate at least one nutritious meal a day, our staff were able to conduct welfare checks at the same time and residents could maintain some social contact with others.

Although our workload may have changed we feel that it is through our team efforts and strong communication across the board that everyone has been helped to stay safe.
