The UK’s first and only live, continually updated care home rating system has announced a major collaboration with the Care Consultant Accreditation Framework (C-CAF), allowing providers to instantly convert their internal mock inspections into a visible, external quality score.
The partnership between OpenScore and C-CAF addresses a critical frustration for care home managers regarding the significant backlog in official regulator inspections. With Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspections often taking place years apart – as many as five years or more in some cases – it has become increasingly difficult to prove to families that standards have improved since the last visit.
Through this new automated integration, mock inspections carried out by C-CAF-accredited consultants and validated through the Mock Inspection Peer Review (MIPR) process will now flow seamlessly into OpenScore, requiring no additional administrative effort.
C-CAF serves as the independent body responsible for accrediting care consultants, ensuring that third-party assessments meet rigorous standards of quality, ethics and expertise.
For homes with outdated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ ratings, the partnership allows them to stand out to self-funding families and commissioners – regardless of the date on their CQC report. While homes with a ‘Requires Improvement’ rating can evidence the work they are doing to enhance their offering ahead of their next CQC inspection.
Explaining the significance of the partnership, Debbie Harris, Founder of OpenScore and Autumna, said: “The regulator cannot be everywhere at once, but that shouldn’t mean good care goes unrecognised. For too long, managers who have worked tirelessly to improve their services have been shackled to outdated ratings.
“By integrating C-CAF’s validated data, we are moving the sector away from a reliance on static history and towards the ‘truth of today’. If you have commissioned a rigorous, independent inspection that proves you are delivering outstanding care, care seekers can know that immediately – not in three years’ time.”
For care home managers, the collaboration offers a way to “turn the lights back on” regarding their reputation. By adhering to the C-CAF MIPR process, they can make their budget work twice as hard: the independent checks they are already paying for now also help them demonstrate their quality to the public.
Luke Rothwell, Managing Director of C-CAF, said: “We developed the MIPR process because we saw care providers paying for expensive mock inspections that often just sat in a drawer. By partnering with OpenScore, we can now turn that internal assurance into a public, trusted quality indicator.
“Crucially, this isn’t just a single consultant’s opinion. Unlike standard mock inspections, our process uses technology to plug reports into a rigorous two-stage peer review panel. This ensures that when a rating goes live on OpenScore, it is a transparent, methodology-checked reflection of the home’s actual quality today – not a snapshot from years ago.”
The integration further enhances the capabilities of the newly launched OpenScore interactive map, which is open to every care home in the UK. Unlike traditional directories that rely on static text, OpenScore uses a sophisticated algorithm to track over 65 real-time indicators, including safety checks, dining quality and live resident feedback.
By combining this live operational data with validated human inspection reports from C-CAF, OpenScore provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date picture of care quality currently available.
