Amherst Court

Amherst Court in Chatham, Kent, offers care for older people living with dementia. In the five key lines of enquiry, CQC inspectors gave the home an Outstanding rating for Responsive and Well Led, and a Good rating for Safe, Caring and Effective. The overall rating was Outstanding.

The key to achieving the Outstanding rating was the action and learning arising from a comprehensive audit programme. Clear documentation is in place which focuses on the key issues and identifies any problem areas. Action plans are drawn up and followed so that problems can be tackled quickly and people are accountable. Lessons are learned, training is provided and competency is checked. The culture is open and transparent with an emphasis on continuous quality improvement.

At the same time Amherst Court is a safe and caring environment where the changing needs of residents are met. Residents are treated with consideration and respect, and staff understand people’s needs and promote independence.

Residents and their relatives described a service that was welcoming, caring and friendly and said they felt safe in the home. The service was considered as part of the community by both relatives and residents.

Relatives spoke highly of the service – ‘I know when I leave Amherst Court after visiting my mother that she is safe and I need not worry about her’. Others said, ‘Without exception the staff are very kind and caring’.

Avante Care and Support is delighted to have the excellent quality of our services recognised in this way.
